Hi Aca-People! I am very excited to be making my Acatribe debut with a post near and dear to my heart.
I am an a cappella fan, obviously, though somewhat of a casual one. I’ve done a fair bit of performing in my younger years but nowadays I get my aca-fix from watching others perform the music I love. If I have anything, or anyone, to thank for my addiction to all things a cappella, I can think of two sources.
Most notable of those would be Mr. Acatribe himself, “Liquid” Dave Bernstein (yes that is one of his real nicknames and yes he loves it when people ask him where it came from). [Editor’s Note: it is a nickname which derives from an early experience with fellow members of the Potsdam Pointercounts, and yes, it relates to alcohol] His passion for a genre I had only thought existed in the form of barbershop and Rockapella confused me at first. But through him I was introduced to a whole new world of vocal performance that has had me hooked ever since.
But before there was Dave, there was High School. Not only did I learn that I could sing, but I found out I could sing without instruments backing me up and not sound terrible (most of the time). It was exhilarating. It’s the feeling I remember most when listening to other groups perform and it is that feeling which I am trying to capture in my first AcaVids post. And since I grew up on Long Island, NY I thought I’d give a shout-out to some LI high schools doing some good work.
So take a listen and try and remember the first time you sang in a group like this and how it made you feel.
~p.s. – Sorry for all the slow songs, they were just the ones I liked the most this week.
